Westies Care, Inc. is a 501(c) 3 public charity most known for its Annual Award dinner providing scholarships to students in furtherance of their educational goals and, in so doing, aim to encourage young people to give back to the West Haven community.
Westies Care was founded in the summer of 2009 when the Liscio family hosted a Blood Drive and began a scholarship program in memory of Daniel L. Liscio, their beloved son. The primary focus was that of organizing volunteers to assist others in various community projects and fund raising. Our annual dinner and award ceremony is our way of recognizing those who exemplify our core values of Service, Community and Education. Some of our recent projects include raising funds for our local food pantry W.H.E.A.T, Fisher House of CT, Breast Cancer Awareness, Veteran’s Anglers and many other local charities. Our scholarship program has awarded over fifteen thousand dollars to worthy students over the past seven years.
Westies Care incorporated and achieved their 501(c) 3 non-profit status in 2014 with the intention of expanding their assistance in a meaningful way in the West Haven community. With that formality came a board of directors consisting of Phil Liscio, Janet Liscio, Colene MacDonald and Peter Rivera.
Our next step has always been to help fill the need of “hunger” in our community. As such we planned a “Community Kitchen” to serve meals to those most in need. The intial roll-out “Phase I” offering a coffee “hour” on Tuesday mornings, started in the Spring of 2016 and has been very successful. Phase II, a dinner on Tuesday evenings will roll out in February of this year starting with a Christmas Dinner offering on the 23rd of December. Finally, Phase III, providing additional resources where needed.
